MARRIAGE LICENSE ~ WEDDING ETIQUETTE

People think getting a marriage license is a daunting task. Not anymore. All you need is 15-20 minutes, the filing of an application and, for San Diego County, $50.00. You'll need to show a valid photo ID or passport. The ID must show your full legal name and birth date. Foreign passports must have a valid Visa. You no longer need to take blood tests. The license is good for 90 days.

Couples must appear in person together at one of the following Recorder/County Clerk's offices. There are five locations around the county that process marriage licenses. They are open 8:00am to 5:00pm, Monday - Friday. The Kearny Mesa branch is also open Saturdays from 9:00am to 3:00pm.

Miscellaneous info

Deputy Marriage Commissioners can perform civil ceremonies for an additional $50.00.

A Public license allows you to be married anywhere in the State of California. This requires a witness and the marriage will become public record.

A Confidential license allows you to be married only within the county that issued the license. No witness is needed and only the bride and groom may obtain a certified copy of the license.

If you have experienced within 90 days prior to applying for a new license one of the following: divorce, death or annulment, you must provide proof. The divorce decree must be final prior to application for a new license.

Both the bride and groom must be 18 years of age in order to apply for a license. If under 18, please contact the Recorder/County Clerk's office for further instruction.

Your minister or officiant performing the ceremony is responsible for filing the license within 10 days of the ceremony with the Recorder/County Clerk's office. Certified copies of the license are available two weeks after the filing for a nominal fee.

For current hours of operation or updated info revolving around obtaining a marriage license, please contact the Recorder/County Clerk's office.
