TRANSPORTATION ~ WEDDING ETIQUETTE

san diego wedding transportation

This article is edited by a professional wedding consultant.

Practicality and etiquette overlap sometimes, and wedding transportation is one area that this is particularly true. During your special day, everyone should be focused on you and the celebration; they should not be anxious about getting lost or having their car towed. You should make it easy for you and your guests to get to and from the wedding ceremony and wedding reception location. Some couples provide transportation for their out-of-town guests, especially if the location is difficult to find or if alcohol will be served.

Logistics

There are three parts to wedding events transportation: to the wedding, to the reception, and to your honeymoon suite. Here are some transportation options to consider - none are strict etiquette rules, so you can mix and match or make your own rules.

To the wedding

  • Separate vehicles for each wedding attendant group - one for the bride and bridesmaids, one for the groom and groomsmen.
  • Separate vehicles for the bride and groom - one for the bride and the brides parents, one for the groom and grooms parents. Wedding attendants ride by themselves.

To the reception

  • Separate vehicles for the bridal party and the wedding attendants - one for the bride and groom and one for the wedding attendants with their spouses / dates / friends.

To the honeymoon suite

  • One vehicle for the bride and groom, with strict instructions to the driver to not tell anyone where you are going.

Go in Style

San Diego has many wedding transportation options that are particularly memorable, fun, and efficient.

Vintage Automobiles

San Diego is home to many vintage car clubs and year round events. Therefore, vintage automobiles for rent are readily available. Have you ever thought of going to your wedding or reception in a classic car you probably could never own - a 1927 Durant, a 1940 Studebaker, a 1947 Ford Woody, or a new sexy red Corvette? Well, now is your chance.

Limousines

Limousines (Limos) are of course the most convenient way to go to a wedding in class. They pick you up, drop you off, and cater to almost every whim - snacks, wine, drinks, and door to door service - with an engaging limo driver that is there to make sure the trip goes smoothly. Limos come in standard "stretch" type, in Hummers, and SUVs also. They can seat anywhere from 4 to 20 passengers.

Shuttles

Shuttles for wedding celebrations are often referred to as a "party bus". They are usually a specialized van, small bus, or even large SUVs with comfortable seating, climate controls, and a driver. Guests are "shuttled" from one location to another and in the process get to socialize together and start the celebration early.

Horse and Buggy Carriages

A horse drawn carriage just like in the story of Cinderella - this is a classic and charming choice available in some parts of San Diego. You and your love can cozy up to each other as you slowly meander your way through the sights and sounds of scenic San Diego. If your wedding ceremony or reception is not in an area where these services are available, this can be a special treat as part of your honeymoon or after the reception when you have some alone time.

Trolleys

San Diego Trolleys wind their way through some very charming parts of San Diego - the San Diego embarcadero and waterfront, Mission Valley, San Diego Old Town, downtown La Mesa, and downtown Santee. If your wedding or reception is near a trolley line, this can be a fun and memorable experience for guests to experience their trip to and from your celebration. Guests staying in downtown San Diego, Mission Valley, or Old Town will especially find the trolley very convenient. This avoids parking and navigation problems.

Ferries

San Diego has many ocean and inland waterways of marinas, bays, lakes, and of course the port of San Diego. Ferries are available mostly in the main San Diego bay area which service Coronado Island and many surrounding marinas where there are hotels, resorts, shopping venues, and restaurants. Private rental ferries and public ferries are both available.

Air Extraordinaire

San Diego is home to many services where you can fly high with hot air balloons, gliders, vintage airplanes, and helicopters. Some couples get married in the air or escape to their honeymoon through the air. Though air travel is not used traditionally for transportation to or from a local wedding event, it is interesting to consider as part of the celebration activities.
